3 TIPS TO CREATE A BIGGER & BRIGHTER SPACE BY USING COLOR

Updated: Feb 3

Years ago, hubs and I lived in Manhattan for his observership right before starting residency. Now if you know anything about NYC, real estate is super expensive and we were stuck with a tiny apartment. There was no way to get more space or go bigger. The only option I was left with was to create the illusion of a bigger and brighter home.

Here are my top 3 tips for you to heighten the perception of space by using color!!

1- Use light cool colors on large spaces, such as walls and bigger pieces of furniture. Light colors obviously reflect more light, making the space appear bigger whereas the cool colors add freshness, hence brightening the space.

Notice how the cabinets and the walls are a cool and light in color

2- To create the perception of height in your room, always paint your ceilings in a lighter color than your walls. Not necessarily white but a few shades lighter than the walls.

The ceiling is painted in a much much lighter color than the wall.

3- Visual clutter can make a space look cramped. Minimizing the appearance of eye sores such as exposed pipes and radiators or architectural details such as wood work can help your space appear bigger. Paint these elements in the same color as the walls to help blend.

The brick wall, window details and the radiator, are all painted in the same color as the wall to reduce visual clutter.

There you go simple but effective use of color.
